Do I have Moles or Gophers? I can’t tell.
Moles don’t create as many holes in your yard as Gophers, but will still leave signs! Moles dig tunnels just below the surface of your yard, creating a dome-shaped mound of dirt that looks like a volcano. These are called “Molehills” and the dirt in here is usually richer and smaller in size than the soil dug up by gophers. Are Moles dangerous?
Moles live underground and are not considered to be a physical threat to humans. In fact, most people will never see the Mole! While Moles won’t cause you harm, they do cause problems for your landscaping and your home. Tunnels dug under and around your foundation can cause water to accumulate and cracks to begin. How many Moles live in my yard?
Moles are antisocial, solitary animals; they live alone except to breed. Their underground territory consists of large, complex burrow systems with separate areas for living and for hunting. In fact, Moles can dig tunnels at a rate of up to 15 feet per hour!
It’s common for 3-5 Moles to live on each acre, but 2-3 is a more common number, depending on soil conditions and food. Additionally, keep in mind that a single Mole will often span more than just your yard, with their range extending up to 2.7 acres.
Can you remove Moles all year long?
Mole damage can happen in any season. You may not see any Mole holes during extra rainy or cold periods, but don’t be fooled. Moles do not hibernate and are digging tunnels and wreaking havoc all year long.
